What you should know now.

The petition is an initiative of the ESN group (Europe of Sovereign Nations) in the European Parliament. ESN is the EU-critical right-wing group that stands up for national sovereignty, freedom of speech and civil rights. The exact person responsible is named in the Imprint.
At first glance, freedom of speech and the monetary system seem unrelated. But both projects follow the same pattern: a central authority in Brussels or Frankfurt gets tools to control what citizens say and how they pay. In both cases it comes down to one question: who is in control — and whether the citizen still decides freely.
No. PayPal is a private company that you sign a contract with. The Digital Euro would be central bank money — issued directly by the ECB. The ECB could technically determine how much of it you may hold, whether it has an expiry date, and what you can spend it on. None of this exists with cash or with your current bank account.
Officially, the ECB and the EU Commission say: no. But the Digital Euro creates the technical infrastructure that makes abolishing or sharply restricting cash practical in the first place. That is exactly why we demand that the right to cash be explicitly protected by law — before the infrastructure is in place.
Fact-checking is legitimate when it is transparent and can be challenged. It becomes problematic when authorities, platforms and state-funded NGOs jointly decide which opinions remain visible.
