Because whoever defines what counts as disinformation also decides, in the end, which information people are still allowed to see at all.
An infrastructure for control
Fact-checkers. Platform oversight. Election monitoring. Account bans. A network of authorities, platforms, NGOs and research institutions is meant to watch over which opinions remain visible and which narratives may keep being spread. An entire infrastructure is being built. An infrastructure for the control and censorship of our public debates.
What this means in practice
The mechanisms often do not work as an open ban, but as invisible throttling. Posts are shown less frequently, accounts have their reach reduced, topics are removed from the trends. Citizens don't notice that they are seeing less — they simply see less. That is exactly what makes this system so effective and so anti-democratic.

Whoever defines disinformation controls the debate
As soon as one central authority decides what counts as disinformation, it indirectly decides which opinions still have a chance in the public space. This is not a theory, it is logic.

Invisible throttling instead of an open ban
Reach is cut back, posts are shown less, trends are filtered. Censorship that doesn't show itself is the most effective form of censorship.

Authorities, platforms, NGOs — three become one
Instead of a clear separation, the roles blur. State-funded fact-checkers hand the platforms labels, the platforms sanction, and the authorities set the framework. No single actor did it on its own — and that is precisely the problem.

No election, no court, no correction
These structures are not democratically legitimised and are hard to challenge in court. Citizens who get throttled have hardly any means of defence.

Laws against incitement already exist
Incitement to hatred, defamation, calls to violence — all already criminal offences, handled by the police, the prosecution and independent courts. No additional layers of control are needed.
